Hilarious chap and brilliant medieval historian. Obviously there are the well known Monty Python sketches which spring to mind, but for me the scene that captured his humour and medieval interest was from his TV series Crusades, in which he attempts to interview the descendant of a goose which led one of the pilgrimages to the Holy Land. RIP Mr. Jones. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Following on from the last post, I managed to get some of the figures painted which were sent by The Duke of Tradgardland. After extensive research ( a quick look on Google), I found the main colours of the house of Oldenburg of Denmark , were yellow and red.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think the officer is an S series Minifigs as he is a lot smaller, but all the others are the ones currently in production. The ensign wears the white sash of Denmark, and I gave him an old school full length standard pole (it looks as if the flag has slipped down a bit so I must fix that).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Once again, many thanks Alan. I enjoyed painting these and hope to expand the army in the future, hopefully with some cuirassiers next.</div>

Having assured Mrs. Atticus I hadn't ordered any more figures ( and if I do I get them sent to my works address), I was delighted to find a bundle of very old Minifigs sent South by The Duke of Tradgardland. Another example of what jolly nice chaps wargamers are...<br />
Here they are hastily mustered outside an Eastern European looking castle<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've always had a soft spot for Minifigs, producers of my favourite fantasy figures, but as yet have not painted any Minifigs historicals. Very tempted to do a small Danish TYW army as I know his Dukeship would approve.</div>

Many thanks Alan, I really appreciate the gift out of the blue.</div>

I haven't been doing much gaming of any kind recently, bar the odd dabble with Lion Rampant and Warhammer, but I have been out metal detecting rather a lot, and son 2 and have found loads of goodies, 2 of which are of a bellicose nature, so suit this blog.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first is a Civil War musket ball, which are a quite common metal detecting find, but this was our first and found on a new piece of land we have been allowed to detect on at the village of Monkton Farleigh near Bath. On July 3rd, Waller's army laid an ambush at Monkton Farleigh hoping to surprise and beat back Hopton's Royalist force advancing from Bradford-on-Avon. They sprung the ambush but were driven back to the ford in the valley below where a fierce fight ensued. This musket ball was probably fired or dropped on that day, during the initial ambush round what is now called Shooters Lane.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2KPEsLfTKMs/XPQEc344uyI/AAAAAAAAEyE/HJ1gxp80M4craXuOIKTIYrDz8crQLhtHACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_20190511_163155.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2KPEsLfTKMs/XPQEc344uyI/AAAAAAAAEyE/HJ1gxp80M4craXuOIKTIYrDz8crQLhtHACKgBGAs/s400/IMG_20190511_163155.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The second find came to light earlier today, and I was desperate to run about telling as many people as I can about it. We braved thick drizzle (which was quite refreshing initially after a muggy day yesterday) to visit another new permission near Frome in Somerset and unearthed a Victorian penny first, followed by this considerably older item from 15" down</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
which I believe to be the head of a Frankish throwing axe, or <i>francisca . </i>These date from the fifth to the eighth ceturies and were used by Germanic troops either serving Rome or busy invading Britain and fighting the likes of King Arthur. Needless to say I pinged a picture off to the county Finds Liason Officer and hope to hear back soon.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can just make out the socket for the shaft in the picture above which we will be leaving untouched until the archaeologist has had a look. So all in all an exciting day. Ifeel a bit guilty neglecting the toy soldier front, but to be honest we are having such a blast detecting, I can't find time to do much else.</div>

A couple of months ago I took the plunge and bought a good lower end of the market detector and we are all absolutely hooked, so much so there is another better detector on order, so we are not queuing up to have a go.<br />
<br />
It was a strange feeling entering an entirely new community with new jargon to learn, (strict) rules to follow and many people to meet but we are having the whale of a time. I won't post too much on everything we find , but here are a couple of items directly related to wargaming which have come up on one of our permissions (a permission is land where you have been allowed by the owner to detect).<br />
<br />
The little chap below was found when son 2 was using the detector, and popped out of the ground yesterday in a field at the end of our road, he was about 6 " down.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R-HHfaqIbqU/XK7dUEhd7DI/AAAAAAAAESs/f-Q5NNCUCG4wTXUy3JlpxORhrKCf0-LRACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_20190410_140502.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R-HHfaqIbqU/XK7dUEhd7DI/AAAAAAAAESs/f-Q5NNCUCG4wTXUy3JlpxORhrKCf0-LRACKgBGAs/s400/IMG_20190410_140502.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A semi flat made of lead, probably about 25mm scale, the horses head was bent right back</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9UzNtNCV9uw/XK7dUHF_HiI/AAAAAAAAESs/kYRpLTZTT_IVYLPnWOJ22oAg0jTv_OQegCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_20190410_140453.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9UzNtNCV9uw/XK7dUHF_HiI/AAAAAAAAESs/kYRpLTZTT_IVYLPnWOJ22oAg0jTv_OQegCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_20190410_140453.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gRwJvPKFCKE/XK7dUMEcKMI/AAAAAAAAESs/ge2v7nQ1bl4sYjbEu8Bj8GoTxsOpp2QagCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_20190410_140438.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gRwJvPKFCKE/XK7dUMEcKMI/AAAAAAAAESs/ge2v7nQ1bl4sYjbEu8Bj8GoTxsOpp2QagCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_20190410_140438.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A worm bids him farewell.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The upper end of the field we were in seems to have been a popular picnic destination in the 18th and 19th century. It has a splendid view of the valley and is far enough out of town to be a pleasant walk there and back to make a day of it. We have also found in the area coins from the reigns of George II, III , William IV and Victoria, teaspoons, a silver matchbox, and other items that may have been dropped by folk having a day out, and perhaps this soldier was lost by some little lad on such an excursion. He has now entered service guarding other finds on my son's shelf of finds.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Less pastoral, but from the same field was this alarming find</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xtvPFNBMzS4/XK7gTXz6zYI/AAAAAAAAES4/xeY6lUkt3jAqV1MLY9PUMTG1G5qZmYDswCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_20190408_171445.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xtvPFNBMzS4/XK7gTXz6zYI/AAAAAAAAES4/xeY6lUkt3jAqV1MLY9PUMTG1G5qZmYDswCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_20190408_171445.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(the orange device is a pinpointer or mini metal detector for locating small finds in holes)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I extricated the casing out first and then was alarmed to see it was still full of granules of what I now know to be smokeless propellant. The bullet was still lodged in the ground and appears to be coated in red colouring (tracer paint?). I guess this is a round from a Spitfire? I think the groove on the base of the casing indicates it was from a belt fed gun, but any ID'S would be welcome.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So there we are, let me know if you are interested in seeing other historical finds.</div>

As it was such a lovely day here, we went for a long walk round the Avebury landscape in Wiltshire. Parking at the Sanctuary we walked along the Ridgeway towards Avebury, skirted the village and back up towards Fyfield Down. Mrs. Atticus snapped up taking a break overlooking Windmill Hill on the path up out of the village.</div>

Although I have always lived in Somerset, I always get the feeling I am coming home when we go across the border to Wiltshire. A move might be in order one day.</div>

Simple , shiny and medieval sum it up. This got me thinking about the influential films which I saw as a youth which filled me with fervour to recreate the armies portrayed in miniature (not that I have done yet, but there is still time hopefully)<br />
<br />
The look of the troops in the following stills is the sort of look I would like to recreate. A lot of the armour has that brushed steel look, plenty of colour and no mud or grime in sight<br />
<br />

I can't remember where these 2 are from, but the soldiers in the picture directly above look just like Revell/Accurate medieval figures.</div>

Just finished this batch of grubby pikemen which were great fun to paint. Renegade Miniatures have real character without being too goofy like a lot of Foundry figures, or a bit bland like Perry's.<br />
<br />
Block paint, drybrush, wash and highlight worked well to give that ragged look one associates with the TYW.<br />

Now, I am well aware of my limitations as a painter but as I have sold the odd batch before, someone must like my style (or pity me).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ntsAAOSw~BRcQI4K/s-l1600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="300" src="https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ntsAAOSw~BRcQI4K/s-l1600.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I think the secret is to find a niche in the market that there is some demand for, and I tend to make extensive use of washes which speeds up the process. This tends to make the figures look quite grubby, and combined with drybrushing they look dusty as well! This grotty realism seems to be all the rage at the moment, and although I prefer my own figures to be nice and bright and shiny, I find painting the grubby way much quicker and fairly therapeutic.<br />
<br />
A slot I have thought about is painting Oldschool style traditional regiments for sale... Spencer Smith, Minifigs, Warrior etc..... what do you think? Nobody else seems to do this, but demand may be non existant.<br />
<br />
We'll see how things go. I sold a few hundred quids worth last year, so I starting the new year with a plan to paint one month for sale, and one month for myself. So far this year, I have painted 8 Spartans, 6 Norman Cavalry, 14 ECW infantry, 12 Outlaws or rangers and 3 LOTR trolls! It is rather fun chopping and changing periods and keeps my interest up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/FTUAAOSwgbdcQI~R/s-l400.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="300" data-original-width="400" height="300" src="https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/FTUAAOSwgbdcQI~R/s-l400.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Pricing is a contentious issue... I wouldn't dream of buying prepainted figures myself, but then that is the best part of the hobby for me, gaming comes a long way second. For others the game is everything and there seem to be plenty of folk with no inclination or time to paint, but who want painted minis to play with. There are some stunning figures for sale on ebay...I was amazed to find one painter selling plenty of 28mm historical infantry miniatures at £60+ EACH. They were works of art, but even if I could paint that well, I'm not sure I could spend all that time on one figure without getting bored. It just shows there are plenty of punters who have funds to spend on their hobby (and good luck to 'em). Conversely there are some pretty basic paint jobs that are selling as well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/73wAAOSwCXxcRJsl/s-l1600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="300" src="https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/73wAAOSwCXxcRJsl/s-l1600.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(<i>EDIT: ECW UNIT ABOVE NOW SOLD</i>)</div>
<br />
<br />
I am pitching my figures at about £6.50 for infantry and £15 for cavalry which of course includes the cost of the casting, but nor basing. I've sold at this price before, and it seems an average price for workmanlike figures, which I hope mine are.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/H3IAAOSwohVcQI9Q/s-l400.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="300" data-original-width="400" height="300" src="https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/H3IAAOSwohVcQI9Q/s-l400.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(<i>EDIT: NORMAN CAVALRY UNIT ABOVE NOW SOLD</i>)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyhow, I will post new units as they come up for sale, and please pop over to my page <a href="https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/malplaquet_miniatures/m.html?item=153346555322&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562">here at Malplaquet Miniatures</a> ebay sales.</div>

I have been painting, but lack of any form of camera has put paid to my posting progress. The current project making good headway is 28mm Italian Wars and I'm well ahead with a Venetian army. This post is just to put up some pictures (taken on Mrs. Atticus' phone) to show a prospective buyer my 1/72 TYW figures I am selling to finance more purchases (including a camera).<br />
<br />
EDIT... ALL SOLD THANKS!<br />

A couple of times I hesitated over the purchase, which resulted in the seller knocking something off the price....I must remember that trick.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q8ghOu1AIu8/WwGnVBHpejI/AAAAAAAAD60/_m7fI5wIXvMjiBTeO2TErZfg5woSlgl7ACLcBGAs/s1600/BLOG7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1357" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q8ghOu1AIu8/WwGnVBHpejI/AAAAAAAAD60/_m7fI5wIXvMjiBTeO2TErZfg5woSlgl7ACLcBGAs/s400/BLOG7.jpg" width="338" /></a></div>
<br />
2 Boxes of 28mm Old Glory ACW infantry (76 mint metal figures for £25). I have been thinking about this period for ages now and this seemed too good an opportunity to miss. I can always paint them and sell them if the project comes to nothing (justify purchase frantically).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xPTpriJqwkY/WwGnSLhBt5I/AAAAAAAAD6w/yude_0WbtOo2ipi_tOroToOj4-7Vx8yUgCLcBGAs/s1600/BLOG8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1164" data-original-width="1600" height="232" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xPTpriJqwkY/WwGnSLhBt5I/AAAAAAAAD6w/yude_0WbtOo2ipi_tOroToOj4-7Vx8yUgCLcBGAs/s320/BLOG8.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Really nice sculpts, with a sort of Peter Gilder feel about them</div>
<br />
<br />
A book on the battles of the ACW £2<br />
<br />
A Citadel Fighting fantasy warrior 50p from 1984 (this will be going on ebay or will end up as a 54mm orc).<br />
<br />
2 Reaper Frost Giants £8 (been thinking about getting these for a while, and the supply of Reaper figs seems to have dried up since Brexit and Trump).<br />
<br />
2 Plastic trolls £2 for both, for a box of 54mm LOTR figures I'm hoarding. Pelennor Fields in 1/32 will be impressive.<br />
<br />
Finally for £10 a tray of 96 25mm Renaissance Spanish, from the collection of Donald Featherstone. I picked these from Chris Scott, who had no idea what make they were, neither do I. A couple of Hinchliffe bods,but the rest are quite slight and beautifully proportioned Pikemen, musketeers, swordsmen and halberdiers. These might be heading to the front of the painting queue. If anyone can tell me what make they are I would be grateful (the pikeman has an S code on the base, but I don't think they are Minifigs).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ubvakT44ZMY/WwGpKzcMVeI/AAAAAAAAD7U/vJDAdYhNZgMbfHER0KNiNuRfOErsNquTACLcBGAs/s1600/BLOG6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1339" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ubvakT44ZMY/WwGpKzcMVeI/AAAAAAAAD7U/vJDAdYhNZgMbfHER0KNiNuRfOErsNquTACLcBGAs/s400/BLOG6.jpg" width="333" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
So, all in all I spent more than I intended, but was pleased by my swag.<br />

</div>
I'm something of a Luddite and generally eschew new technology as I don't understand it very well and it scares me. However this ostrich mentality has left by blogging in the lurch as my trusty camera died some time ago, and I have shied away from getting a decent mobile with camera (my current mobile telephone is a 9 year old Nokia which has been maltreated, dropped, washed twice and generally abused, but is still functioning).<br />
<br />
However a post from Alan at <a href="https://tradgardland.blogspot.co.uk/2018/05/s-club-5-again.html?showComment=1525533151416#c5584430662862398718">Tradgardland</a> demonstrated that with perseverance one can overcome these technological hurdles, so I borrowed Mrs. Atticus' mobile and managed to take some pictures with it!!<br />
<br />
I've been managing to do a bit of painting and even some gaming recently, and a chat with 2 of my wargames buddies has enthused me to try painting some Italian Wars figures. I've always been keen on this conflict since the Peter Gilder days in Miniature Wargames. Rather than dashing off and buying loads of new figures however, I thought I would try and use figures from the lead mountain.<br />
<br />
To start with I thought I would have a go at an unctuous Cardinal, which no Italian Wars game should be without. Perry Miniatures make a cracking cardinal model, but I already had an Essex one, so added a chinstrap to his hat, which made him look a bit more Renaissance than Medieval.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Painting defects show up in these photos, but at least I got some paint on figures which is the main thing. The sidekick banner bearer is an Essex johnny too, and just as I had finished him, I dropped him and 2 of the crosses on the banner broke off. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's been a bit quiet on this blog so I thought I would show these chaps I finished in January. Last year I actually managed to play a game of Lion Rampant with my chum Speckled Jim, and actually rather enjoyed it.....it being simple enough for even my shrivelled brain to comprehend (added to which I won). SJ announced he was starting to paint some Vikings up, so I thought an army heavy in cavalry might be able to run rings about him.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Over the last year or so I have been enjoying watching "Vikings" on Amazon Prime, the producers have made an effort to do some research, and although historically it's complete pants, if viewed as a semi mythical saga, it's actually rather good. However like most popular fiction set in the early medieval period, the Christians get a bum deal and are invariably portrayed as weak, incompetent, corrupt or debauched, or all these things together..... for goodness sake, if they were that spineless how is it they completely crushed almost all vestiges of Paganism in Europe, and we aren't all speaking Danish/Swedish . I blame Bernard Cornwell , a man with a big axe to grind.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Having gnashed my teeth at the blundering Saxon soldiers in "Vikings", the Franks were portrayed as equally timorous, until led by ex-Viking Rollo (my favourite character). The real Franks (and Saxons come to that) were of course just as ruthless and nasty as the Vikings, and Charlemagne did a splendid job of shortening several thousand Saxon prisoners one afternoon after they had upset him (he had them all beheaded).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Although my Frankish army is from the time of Charlemagne (747AD-814AD) rather than the Vikings, I copied the colour scheme from the TV series, with lots of turquoise and gold, and painted them up as semi-mythical, with the heavy cavalry in gilded armour and white cloaks as the Emperor's Paladins.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The yeomen were cobbled together from all sorts of odd figures. Some old Essex with head swaps, a pair of Garrison legs with an OG body...this was an army on a budget. The horses are a right medley as well.</div>

The Paladins were almost all Old Glory, with the odd Artizan figure. The Franks were known for using flanged spears on horseback, so I had to add paper wings to these lances.</div>

All in all a fun little army to paint. The good thing was there were no figures left over. I bought 1 bag of OG infantry, 1 of cavalry, and an Artizan command pack and scraped around for spare horses for the yeomen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was a little shocked I knew so little of Charlemagne, and more surprised by what a colossus he is in the rest of Europe, legends about him and his paladins stretching from Scandinavia to Italy and beyond. Of course, most European countries still treasure their legends and folklore, teaching them in nurseries and schools. I can't see that happening here. Well worth looking into anyhow. Here's a stirring tune I found about Roland's last stand.</div>

However blogger have been up to their tricks again, a deliberate conspiracy to drive me hopping mad.<br />
<br />
Firstly my dashboard changed from a handy one page with everything visible, to a veritable labyrinth. I have only just found how to access this blog again, the only one being visible was my fantasy blog.<br />
<br />
Secondly, my avatar, the chap in the wig (Sanderson Miller the garden architect), has vanished off a number (but not all) of the blogs I follow. I am still officially following them, but the blog owner can't see that.<br />
<br />
Thirdly, now when I try and follow (or re-follow) a blog, I have to use my real name rather than Springinsfeld (I would rather remain incognito on the net), and no avatar appears (unless I reload the image). There is no option given to follow privately.<br />
<br />
What does it all mean, and why is it happening?Springinsfeldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14088330681756351208noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3792525235778773288.post-66070428212340948432016-07-01T15:28:00.000-07:002016-07-01T15:30:57.946-07:00MY GRANDAD'S MEDALSA bit of a flying post, everything I do seems to be in a rush recently, and I haven't had much time for blogging with one thing and another. I've been meaning to post these up for a while now, and today, the centenary of The First Day of the Somme seems like a good time.<br />
<br />
I don't remember my Grandad (my Mum's father). I was only about 6 months old when he died in 1969, but at least he met me. His breathing problems carried him off in the end, partially exasperated by his heavy smoking, mainly because the one lung he had left after being gassed was in tatters. About 20 years ago I tried to gather some information about his activities in the Great War. He joined the army in 1915, aged 17, and as far as I can make out he was in the Rifle Brigade at this point and then transferred to 4th Reserve Infantry Brigade<br />
During this time , presumably still in England he won a ten mile race in full marching kit for which he received this little award<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
his initials stand for Charles Darwin Longfield, presumably HIS parents were Darwinists and the name has been preserved in our family, although none of my own kid's have it (which was remiss of me). He also received a silver topped swagger stick for winning this race, but that is in my Mum's umbrella stand at the moment and I couldn't photograph it tonight.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are his War medals, including the MSM he won in 1917, having moved to 244 coy Machine Gun Corps and been made a Sergeant by this time. They are in mint condition as he never wore them. My Mum tells me he made light of his experiences, and used to scare her with stories about the rats in the trenches, but didn't think much of the medals as a token of what he and his mates went through.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The MSM was either awarded for gallantry of useful service. If the former then the citation recorded the deed, but if useful service the deed was not recorded, and it seems the latter was the case for my Grandad. There are several family stories of how he won it, one being he shot down a German spotter plane with either his pistol (I believe machine gunners carried small arms) or the machine gun, or he took out a series of enemy gun nests with his MG team.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the citation as it appeared in the London Gazette in 1917, he's 4 up from the bottom 6285 Sjt CD Longfield</div>

He certainly fought on the First Day of the Somme, possibly with the KOYLI according to family stories, but I'm not sure . 244 Coy MGC seems to have been active later in the War according to this document I gleaned from some record office years ago</div>

At some stage in 1917, possibly at Cambrai, he was badly gassed and left for dead. He was recovered some days later, but had been been blinded by the gas as well and remained blind for 6 months having been sent back to Blighty. The colliery he worked for (Allerton Bywater near Leeds) sent wounded veterans to convalescence in Scotland, where they recovered by cutting pit props and generally breathing in clean air. The colliery also awarded him this certificate</div>

I would be interested to find out the meaning of the little house and 'cannon'.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now let's take a look at our family's other war hero (they are all hero's in my view, to make it through such a bloody awful affair).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Private Mick Comerford was my Dad's uncle. He later became a gamekeeper at a little village called Berkley near Frome in Somerset,not far from where I live, but my Dad was brought up in Lancashire and used to come down to Somerset in the 30's as a small boy to stay on the estate Uncle Mick worked on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Uncle Mick joined up in 1915, and we also have his medals. He has the 1914-15 star, which I think was awarded to soldiers who fought in 1915. The 1914 star was for those who joined in 1914. However he was given the Christmas tin of cigarettes and chocolate which initially was for soldiers at the front at Christmas 1914. Just reading up on the tin now, more seem to have been issued later on using surplus fund money, so he could have been a later recipient.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sYr5rEykMCk/V3bozbn3xvI/AAAAAAAADdQ/KAWzDhVQI1smv5f_M8bBCJW4mHfZp7pBgCLcB/s1600/IMG_3280.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sYr5rEykMCk/V3bozbn3xvI/AAAAAAAADdQ/KAWzDhVQI1smv5f_M8bBCJW4mHfZp7pBgCLcB/s400/IMG_3280.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lTjdW8IiNUM/V3boxtJ5JlI/AAAAAAAADdM/IJEtDyXlXoY_5u8oybT8hsGMADW-1ptIgCLcB/s1600/IMG_3279.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lTjdW8IiNUM/V3boxtJ5JlI/AAAAAAAADdM/IJEtDyXlXoY_5u8oybT8hsGMADW-1ptIgCLcB/s400/IMG_3279.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Uncle Mick often wore his medals, ands as you can see they are a bit more battered than my Grandad's.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
He fought with the Royal Berkshire Regiment, and it seems from the battle list below, they had a pretty rough time of it</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Again, happily, he made it through, unscathed as far as I know and his discharge is recorded here</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

My Mum (87) was feeling a bit glum today, after watching and listening to memorial services, but if her Dad hadn't made it through the War, she wouldn't have been around nor my brothers, myself or our children, so we have a lot to rejoice about, while remembering those who didn't make it back.</div>

<br />
As usual, we went down to see the village Morris Men performing on May Day, outside the school where the 'side' was formed back in the 1930's<br />

We don't get to see many films set in the 17c , and rarely one where the dialogue, costume and behaviour of the protagonists is so well portrayed. The director had clearly done his homework and I recognised several real quotes from 17c witch witch trials. It certainly wasn't an easy watch, the burgeoning sense of paranoia, the graphic portrayal of witches rites (as recorded in trial testimonies) and the discordant soundtrack all added up to make a harrowing yet compelling film. I'll certainly be buying it when it's released on DVD to add to the folk horror collection.<br />
<br />
Now...who does figures of 17c witches and civilians....?<br />
